Migration or lock-in
Getting in is free. Getting out is billed by the gigabyte.
Ingress costs nothing and egress costs plenty, which is the whole design. Add proprietary APIs with no equivalent elsewhere, managed services whose behaviour is not documented well enough to reimplement, and a data set too large to move without a purchase order, and the exit becomes a project rather than a decision. Lock-in is rarely one choice — it is a hundred reasonable ones that are expensive to reverse together.
